How to install open source video drivers in Ubuntu
In my earlier article I wrote about how to install the proprietary video drivers in ubuntu, however some of you will notice that not all video cards are supported. Especially ATI cards which usually have support for linux dropped quite early. With these cards you have the open source video drivers which you can install and still be able to have a fair enough graphic support on linux.
Step 1 – Remove the current fglrx / proprietary drivers
Do keep in mind, you should only follow this tutorial only if your proprietary drivers failed to work for you. Its best using the original drivers supported by your adapter.
By default these should be installed, but just to be sure, you remove these, please run:
- This may not exist if you didn’t installed your display adapter manually from ATI website
1 |
sudo sh /usr/share/ati/fglrx-uninstall.sh |
- This needs to complete and purge your fglrx settings
1 |
sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx fglrx_* fglrx-amdcccle* fglrx-dev* |
Step 2 – install open source drivers
After you’ve done this, ensure you have the open source video drivers installed:
1 |
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-ati |
This will work with almost all ATI display adapters. Your next step is to reboot your computer and enjoy your new graphic.
And that is all!
